Chandra observations of the globular cluster M 54

چکیده
We have carried out a Chandra observation of the globular cluster M54. We detected 7 sources located within the half-mass radius of M54, at a flux limit of 1.5 × 10erg s cm in the 0.3−8 keV energy band. The spatial distribution and the colour/spectral properties of the 7 sources suggest that they are likely to be cataclysmic variables or LMXBs in the globular cluster. M54 shows the largest number of X-ray sources with luminosities greater than 10erg scompared to other globular clusters observed using Chandra and XMMNewton. We searched for a correlation between the number of sources above this luminosity level with globular cluster parameters. We found evidence that the number of sources peaks at a King concentration parameter c∼1.71.9, with globular clusters which are core-collapsed or have low-c values having a smaller number of sources. We speculate on possible reasons for this.

We report an observation by the Chandra X-ray Observatory of 4U2127+119, the X-ray source identified with the globular cluster M15. The Chandra observation reveals that 4U2127+119 is in fact two bright sources, separated by 2.7. One source is associated with AC211, the previously identified optical counterpart to 4U2127+119, a low mass X-ray binary (LMXB). The second source, M15-X2, is coincide...

We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster NGC 288. We detect four X-ray sources within the core radius and seven additional sources within the half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of LX = 7×1030 ergs s−1 (assuming cluster membership) in the 0.3–7 keV band. We also observed the cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and...
متن کاملCataclysmic Variable Stars in the Nearest Globular Cluster , NGC 6397 : Intermediate Polars ?
NGC 6397 is the closest globular cluster, and hence the ideal place to search for faint stellar populations such as cataclysmic variables (CVs). HST and Chandra observers have identified nine certain and likely CVs in this nearby cluster, including several magnetic CV candidates. We have combined our recent UV imagery with archival HST images of NGC 6397 to search for new CV candidates and espe...
متن کاملX-ray Sources and Their Optical Counterparts in the Globular Cluster M4
We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S3 imaging observation of the Galactic globular cluster M4 (NGC6121). We detect 12 X-ray sources inside the core and 19 more within the cluster halfmass radius. The limiting luminosity of this observation is Lx ≈ 10 29 erg s for sources associated with the cluster, the deepest X-ray observation of a globular cluster to date. We identify 6 X-ray so...
متن کاملHigh-resolution x-ray imaging of a globular cluster core: compact binaries in 47Tuc.
We have obtained high-resolution (approximately 1") deep x-ray images of the globular cluster 47Tucanae (NGC 104) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to study the population of compact binaries in the high stellar density core. A 70-kilosecond exposure of the cluster reveals a centrally concentrated population of faint (Lx approximately 10(30-33) ergs per second) x-ray sources, with at least 108...
